History

The Old Bundy Tavern has a long and proud history in Bundaberg.

The hotel was built in 1917 to a design by local architect F.H. Faircloth. It began life as the Hotel Bundaberg. It is on the site of one of Bundaberg’s earliest public houses, the Custom House Hotel which was built in the 1870s and one of the first establishments in Bundaberg. That hotel was later destroyed by fire.

The Custom House Hotel, a two-storey timber structure, was destroyed by fire in 1915 and a brick building was constructed on the site in 1917. It was renamed The Old Bundy Tavern in 1991.

The hotel is proud of its nearly 100-year history.

The Bundaberg Mail on 6 September 1919 noted the furnishings of the “handsome” Hotel Bundaberg had been completed and “the commodious premises” will be ready to accommodate visitors on and after Tuesday next.

On 24 September 1936 The Catholic Press reported: “Queensland has a big tourist influx and visitors have a delightfully wide variety of scenery… But more than Nature’s charms must be sought – comfortable accommodation is imperative – and so the wise stray at Ryan’s Hotel Bundaberg. [The licensee was Mrs E. Ryan].”

It went on to speak warmly of the hotel. “It is a splendid modern hotel with all first-class appointments, excellent cuisine, spacious, sunny verandahs, cool and airy rooms, and having a grand outlook over the river and surrounding country. The tariff is moderate.”

The hotel was highly contemporary and, according to an earlier report in The Bundaberg Mail, “beautifully furnished”. On 16 December 1919 it noted: “The furnishing of this hotel is on an elaborate scale and compares favourably with many of the great southern houses, the spacious dining room, lounge and smoke room together with the garden roof all add to the attractiveness of the establishment.”
